Frequently Asked Questions
How does the commission process work?
Once you have looked at all my work and have decided that you like my style and
wish to have me do a one of a kind original piece of artwork, contact me at
anneviadesigns@gmail.com and let me know you would like to commission me for
a painting.
What is the first step?
Send me an email and let me know what you would like done. I can let you know
my current availability and what the expected turn around time will be at that time.
Holidays, like Christmas, tend to get very busy and I often book up before
December even starts. Also consider if a portrait needs to be shipped, that also
adds time. Ideally I like to have 6 weeks notice, but have been known to get them
done in considerably less time. But also sometimes need more time at Christmas,
and often book up early and have a waiting list if I get too many commissions at
one time.
Do you work from photographs or life?
I work only from photographs at this time.
What photo should I choose?
Choose a photo that you love.
If you are not sure, you can send multiple photos and I can help you
navigate which photos will work best, and which will translate well into
art.
In paintings with multiple subjects, it IS possible for me to combine
photos to create a painting that everyone looks good in.
The photo(s) should be clear and sharp with good lighting and exposure.
Sometimes, I can correct this through photoshop to improve the
reference photo.
High resolution is important as well. When you expand on the photo with
your fingers, the details should remain clear. Blurry or pixelated photos
will not work well, if at all. Some can be sharpened through filters, but
some cannot. If you are not sure, I can look at what you have and see if it
will work. (Insert 2 photos as examples)
Subjects should be as close up in the reference photos as possible. I
cannot do an accurate portrait when the face in the photo is far away.
There is not enough detail to create an accurate photo if the face is too
small.
Natural light is best. Flash photography tends to wash out important
details.
What size is best? How much does it cost?
I generally offer 3 sizes, though with exception, I can do larger. 11x14 is the most
popular size, but below is the list of sizes and prices (which include shipping in the
continental USA):
8x10 $250 (1-2 subjects, in rare cases, 3, subject to my approval)
11x14 $375 (1-3 subjects, in rare cases, 4)
16x20 $600 (1-5 subjects)
Larger sizes available upon request.
What’s next?
Once you have made contact with me, and we have discussed your reference
photo, and determined the size you wish to order, I work the composition. I crop
the photo, if needed, to fit the proportions of the size of the artwork. I also show
you how photos will be combined, if applicable. Background is determined, if
different from the photo.
When the composition is made, I send it to you for approval. Once you approve
the composition, I will require a 50% NON REFUNDABLE deposit. Check the
contact page for various forms of payment. Only after a deposit is paid are you
given a time slot for your painting to be done. I work on only one piece at a time
from start to finish. Typical turn around time is 3 weeks, but you will know when at
the time of booking your expected wait.
Do you show me progress pictures?
No. I have a very strict policy about not showing the work while it is in progress. I
am more than happy to share with you the progress pictures once the piece is
complete though, so you can see how your piece came to be. I DO let you know
when I start your piece, and I DO give periodic updates on longer projects.
What happens when it is finished?
Once the piece is finished, I will show you a photo of the finished piece. It is
important to understand that the photo may not accurately reflect color or lighting
(but I do my best to be accurate). In general, the photos do not show all the
subtleties and details that are in the painting. Everyone has said that they always
look better in person than in the photos.
When you see the finished piece via photo, and you are happy with it, the
remaining balance of 50% is due immediately unless other arrangements have
been made ahead of time. Once payment is received, I ship the painting out within
12-48 hours. All pieces are insured and tracking information and estimated
delivery is provided at this time. It is always appreciated that you let me know you
received the painting safe and sound.
Do you frame the paintings before shipping?
No. I package the paintings to not be damaged during shipping but matting
(recommended) and framing is on you. The exception is some of my larger pieces
that are professionally framed prior to selling them.
Framing Your Art
Your artwork may smear if touched, so it should remain under protective cover until it is framed. It is important to use a mat with the frame when framing it. The mat not only makes the artwork look more finished, but it will also prevent the glass from directly touching it, thus protecting it. Most of my work will fit in standard sized frames.
Please share my work, as referrals are important to my business. Thank you!
